Dear Srinivas,

Thank you so much for details and the update and agenda for the next meeting in IIT-Delhi, Monday 2 November.

To alert and highlight the minimum level of detail we should be aiming for in the planned discussions and targets for outcomes I point to and copy below from Johan Volkier Bentinck's PhD thesis "Unruly Urbanisation on Delhi’s fringe; changing patterns of land use and livelihood" (191 pages, guided by Prof.dr. P.H. Pellenbarg Co-promotor: Dr. P.C.J. Druijven and approved 2000; University of Groningen (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands).

There should be ways and means to develop such detailed analysis locally - and if required both within or outside the remit of academia.

It is also likely that such details might be available already for every city in India with a population in excess of one million.

Fifty three of India's cities that fall in this group are listed at:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_million-plus_urban_agglomerations_in_India

This number will rapidly increase to over 100 cities or more in less than a decade to come.

The scale-up needed is a challenge - but a problem that 'engineers' are familiar with and happy to tackle and handle.

And then there is the biology and biology-related issues too to consider.  Unlike some aspects of engineering projects many of the biology issues (for instance gestation period in cattle) cannot be accelerated and have to be detailed with even greater care.

Await more news.

Much love,

Madan

Johan Volkier Bentinck's PhD thesis (191 pages) is available at:

Johan Volkier Bentinck (b. 21 May 1969; Haarlemmermee)

A few lines from Chapter 2 about Delhi's Alipur Block - north Delhi - Alipur in Delhi's North District borders Sonepat District of Haryana to the north, Delhi's Khanjhawala Block to the south and south west
Baghpat District of UP to the east over Yamuna river.

Note that much has changed in and around Delhi since this thesis was submitted in 2000.

2.
THE RURAL-URBAN FRINGE AS PART OF METROPOLITAN DELHI

2.3
Alipur Block as part of Delhi’s rural-urban fringe

In total, Alipur Block covers an area of 221 km², corresponding with dimensions of
approximately 15 by 15 km. Alipur Block has fertile soils, especially near the river, and
the quality of groundwater also makes the area quite suitable for cultivation.
The main road running towards Amritsar (GT Road) separates the block into an eastern and a
western part. The eastern part has relatively more land under intensive cultivation and
yields better harvests, including horticultural crops. The most important service centres
are Burari and Bakhtawarpur. The western part contains more urban sprawl, and the soils
are less fertile in some places. The town of Narela (50,000 inhabitants) is growing
rapidly. Smaller towns include Alipur and Bawana (just across the border in Kanjhawala
Block but nevertheless important as a service centre for Alipur Block as well). The
railway has little importance for the villages (there are no stations) but does have
considerable meaning for Narela, where there is a large grain market.
A more detailed account of land use in Alipur Block is provided in Chapter 3.

Dear all,
Namaste !

Greetings from Delhi.

The follow-up meetings to discuss upon the Resolutions of Nagpur' Seminar (held at ICAR and IIT-Delhi) have been very fruitful and the following things emerged from these meetings:

1. To draft a project proposal on 'GREEN ECONOMY' (name given by Dr Vijay Bhatkar ji) which will be a financially viable model for the village-clusters being proposed under UBA.

2. To converge the schemes of atleast 8 Ministries of GoI for these village-clusters and organizing an event in mid-December for the same.

3. To initiate the long-awaited field work for creating a model village-cluster in Alipur block of Delhi NCR (that was launched by Hon'ble MoRD Shri Virender Singh Choudhary ji at GPF @ Delhi-Seminar during  5-9 May-2015).

Next meeting to formulate an action-plan & drafting an initial concept-note on the proposed 'Green Economy' project (i.e. primarily Cow-based sustainable rural economy) is scheduled for Monday evening (2nd Nov) at IIT-D.

Look forward to valuable inputs from each of our online-group members in this regard.

Humble pranams,

Dr.SrinivasRao Surabhi
